Big camera changes are said to be coming for the iPhone 8
Sources told Bloomberg that big changes are coming to the front and rear-facing cameras on the iPhone 8. They also reiterated earlier reports of three iPhone models, curved OLED display, stainless steel frame and in-screen Touch ID.
Bloomberg managed to obtain a heap of information about the upcoming iPhones, which include the significant camera changes being tested on the phones.
Calling it the most extensive iPhone lineup to date for Apple, sources told Bloomberg that Apple is testing prototypes of the iPhone 8 (also known as the iPhone Edition) with a dual-camera system being positioned vertically for better image quality. While Japanese site MacOtakara reported about the vertical dual-lens layout in December 2016, it did not share the reason behind that change. The iPhone 8 should continue to sport the slight camera bump which is found on the current iPhone models.
On the front, Apple is said to be exploring Sony dual-lenses for augmented reality (AR)-based features and depth-of-field enhancements. Integration of the cameras into the displays were also being experimented in the past. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shared in his research note two months ago that the iPhone 8 could have a "revolutionary" 3D-sensing front camera with potential applications in AR, facial and iris recognition.
The Bloomberg's report also corroborates many rumors about the iPhone 8 such as:
- three iPhone models later this year where two models are merely upgraded versions of the iPhone 7/7 Plus, and the iPhone 8
- delayed availability of the iPhone 8
- iPhone 8 having an almost bezel-less OLED display which is larger than the 5.5-inch display of the iPhone 7 Plus
- iPhone 8 having a comparable size as the iPhone 7
- iPhone 8 having an on-screen home button
- iPhone 8 prototypes with curved glass on the front and back, and stainless steel frames are being tested
- A new generation processor built on the 10nm process which are more power efficient
