Rumours say Xiaomi is working on a button-less phone set for release in 2025.
SmartPrix's source claims that Xiaomi's next flagship phone, codenamed "Zhuque", will have no physical buttons.
The true all-screen phone, widely regarded as the holy grail of smartphone design, may rely on gesture controls, pressure-sensitive areas, and voice commands for controls.
Xiaomi's purported implementation seems somewhat similar to Apple's failed attempt at developing a "button-less" iPhone design.
Apple was reportedly working with supplier Cirrus Logic on a new "high-performance mixed-signal chip (HPMS) component" for the solid-state buttons on the iPhone.
Additionally, Apple was said to have developed an ultra-low energy chip to power the solid-state buttons. The chip is said to be able to sense capacitive button presses even if the iPhone has a case or the user is wearing gloves.
However, Apple's plans fell through at the last minute due to "design issues". Consequently, Apple could start with a less ambitious initiative on this year's iPhone 16 by introducing the rumoured new Capture button. Word on the street is that this button will support swipe gestures for zoom adjustment.
As for Xiaomi's "Zhuque" phone, it is also believed to have an under-display selfie camera and it will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 4 chip – an enhanced variant of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 that is expected to debut in October 2024.
Since the "Zhuque" phone is still in the early stages of development, there's no guarantee Xiaomi will pull off this innovative design.
