Back in January, Ubisoft began pre-registration for Assassin's Creed Shadows, the newest game in the stealth-based franchise, which included Macs. And the company is delivering, as the game will see a day one release on macOS, alongside PC and consoles.
You might've heard this before as Ubisoft previously announced this at WWDC 2024, with the release date originally set to be 15 November of last year. Since then, multiple delays cast the game's release into some doubt, but it seems that Ubisoft isn't leaving any platforms behind in the game's eventual launch later this month.
Although Assassin's Creed hasn't always consistently been available on Apple machines, Shadows's day one release on Macs has been planned for a while. The game, built on Ubisoft's proprietary Anvil engine, makes use of Apple's Metal 3 API for its graphics, and has native support for M-series chips dating back to the M1. It also takes advantage of the technology on newer chips, with real-time ray tracing on M3 and M4 machines.
This comes at a time when Apple is hammering in the potential for gaming on Macs. Death Stranding and Resident Evil Village are just some of the triple-A games that have trickled down to macOS, with Cyberpunk 2077 following suit. But day one Mac releases for big budget titles are rare, and Ubisoft has given Assassin's Creed Shadows the distinction of being one of the first to do so (though if you count technicalities like early access, other titles like Baldur's Gate 3 can lay claim to that honour as well).
Assassin's Creed Shadows is set in 16th century Japan, and follows two protagonists, the stealthy assassin Naoe and samurai Yasuke, the latter of whom is based on the real African samurai of the same name. The game will release on 20 March for M-series Macs on the Mac App Store, as well as PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Amazon Luna as well as PC via Steam, Epic Games Store and Ubisoft Store. It's up for pre-order now for S$94.90 on Ubisoft's website.
The game will also be available through Ubisoft+. Interestingly, a release is also planned for iPads with M-series chips, but there's no word on when this will happen yet.
