Google has reportedly canned the Pixel Tablet 2 and is quitting tablet business again

It seems Google and tablets are just not meant to be together.

According to Android Authority, Google is reportedly cancelling the development of the second-generation Pixel Tablet.

This created quite a bit of a stir because just the day before, Android Headlines reported that Google was cancelling the third-generation Pixel Tablet – not the second.

However, Android Authority insists that it’s the second-generation device that’s affected, which probably means Google is exiting the tablet business again, after just last year’s Pixel Tablet.

This isn’t the first time that Google has exited the tablet business. In 2019, the company issued a statement which said that it would stop making tablets and instead focus on its Chromebooks.

It looks like it’s happening again, which must mean sales of the first-generation Pixel Tablet have been poor.

Google’s on-and-off again attitude towards tablets has given Apple a massive edge in this space. The iPad is now the runaway leader in this category, and its lineup is looking strong now with the recently released iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad mini.

That said, Android tablets have been enjoying a bit of a resurgence of late with Samsung's new Tab S10 Ultra and Tab S10+, Xiaomi’s new Pad 7 Series, and OPPO’s recently released Pad 3 Pro.

It will be interesting to see how Google's rumoured exit from the tablet business will affect companies still keen on making Android tablets.

Google was expected to launch the second-generation Pixel Tablet sometime next year.
