Huawei is one step closer to its goal of overtaking Samsung as the biggest phone maker in 2020. The Chinese phone maker just revealed that it shipped over 200 million phones this year, which is a record high compared to the 153 million units in 2017.
It credited the success to the P20 and Mate 20 series, which had shipments of 16 million and 5 million units respectively. In addition, its Nova series sold over 65 million units since its debut in 2016. The Honor series had "outstanding performance" as well, with the Honor 10 and Honor View 10 singled out as contributing factors to its success.
Looking ahead, Huawei may face a tough challenge in maintaining its momentum. The ongoing trade war with the U.S, the arrest of its CFO, device bans in Western markets, concerns about its suspected ties with the Chinese state and miliatry, and a saturating smartphone market would affect its smartphone sales in the next few years.
