Gamescom isn’t all about games, there are gaming hardware announcements too! Samsung has just revealed its latest innovation at Gamescom 2024. Initially unveiled as a concept at CES 2024, the Odyssey 3D, is a gaming monitor that delivers a 3D experience without the need for special glasses.

To display 3D content, the Odyssey 3D has an advanced light field display (LFD) technology that comprises a thin layer of lenticular lens on the front panel, eye tracking capabilities, and View Mapping technology. The 3D effect that you are seeing is thanks to the lenticular display present. This special display delivers separate images to your eyes, which creates a 3D effect.

To optimise this image, the Odyssey 3D uses a built-in stereo camera that tracks the movement of both eyes and adjusts its image accordingly using View Mapping technology to ensure viewers get the best possible 3D imagery.

This is not the first time we have seen a monitor of this kind. Acer also has its own Acer Predator SpatialLabs View 27 gaming monitor capable of displaying 3D content without glasses. Compared to the Odyssey 3D, Acer takes a slightly different approach by utilising SpatialLabs software to develop individual 3D profiles with existing depth information from games.

Available in 27 and 37-inch sizes, the Odyssey 3D is no slouch, boasting specifications necessary to meet the needs of gamers, such as support for 4K resolution and a QLED panel that has a refresh rate of 165Hz.

In terms of ports, there is one DisplayPort 1.4 port and two HDMI 2.1 ports. The monitor does support AMD FreeSync and comes with a height-adjustable stand.

If you find yourself sick of the 3D mode, the Odyssey 3D allows users to switch between 2D and 3D modes based on their preferences. This makes it a versatile monitor for gaming and content consumption.

Pricing and availability

Samsung says that the Odyssey 3D monitor will be released sometime later this year. All that’s left is the pricing which is yet to be disclosed. We will update this article if the monitor is coming to Singapore.
