Huawei reportedly preparing to launch triple foldable smartphone ahead of Samsung

Samsung's concept S-Fold display, first teased in 2021.

What’s the next step after foldable smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 and the OPPO Find N3? According to one source, that step is multifoldable phones.

The Korean Herald reported that Huawei is looking at launching its first triple foldable smartphone by Q2 2024 to challenge Samsung’s ironclad hold on the foldable smartphone market. Huawei’s multifoldable phone will feature either an S-shaped or Z-shaped folding pattern, with two sets of hinges and three display panels.

The report also added that this phone’s form factor would offer greater display real estate, and may even replace modern tablets. The Korean Herald tried to verify this rumour but was met with a “no comment” from its Huawei spokesperson.

This is not the first time someone has said Huawei is ahead of Samsung in launching a multifoldable smartphone. Previous rumours by tipsters in the display industry have also said that Huawei’s multifoldable would be coming this year.

Tri-folding and rollable phones have been rumoured as early as 2020, with Samsung Display once publishing sketches of phones that featured these display types. In 2021, Samsung has also unveiled several concept foldables, such as an S-Foldable OLED panel and Slidable OLED panel.

The battlefield of foldables is not strictly in the domain of a few phone brands, with brands like Tecno recently showcasing rollable display phones. Even Honor, who is homing in on bringing in flagship-grade handsets at palatable prices in Singapore, also has a concept foldable mobile that resembles a purse.
