There are many reasons for phone brands to determine the next viable smartphone form factor. Just look at clamshell foldable smartphones and see how far (and widespread) they've become in a few short years.

Tecno Mobile, which goes by its brand name Tecno, recently unveiled its rollable screen concept phone. Called the Phantom Ultimate, the rollable phone already fixes a pain point of its form factor even before rollable phones are mainstream.

According to Tecno, existing rollable displays have one major issue — they take forever to roll up or unfurl. A rollable display user would likely be twiddling their thumbs, waiting for the display to reach its full girth and potential.

In the Phantom Ultimate, Tecno made a custom powertrain, planetary reducer, and slider crank mechanism for its single-motor system. This lets the concept phone's rollable display spend only 1.2 to 1.3 seconds to go from 6.55 inches to 7.11 inches.

For context, it takes about 150-400ms for a human eye to blink. So, the concept phone can unfurl itself faster than a blink of an eye.

When at rest, the rolled-up display wraps around the Phantom Ultimate's rear, serving as a secondary screen. Unfurling would make the rolled-out panel one single main display.

Tecno said the concept phone's panel is On-cell LTPO AMOLED with 2,296 x 1,596 pixels resolution with 100% DCI-P3 and 1-120Hz refresh rate with 1,100-nits brightness. That makes the rollable display equal to what users can expect in premium flagship handsets.

Of course, a concept phone rarely gets it all right on the first instance — in the case of Tecno Phantom Ultimate, it has a 9.93mm thickness. That's impressive by rollable display standards, but the typical smartphone is slimmer (anywhere from 7mm to 9mm), so it's still a millimetre shy from conventional design. Also, an extra ~0.6 inches isn't that much, despite what they tell you.
