Huawei is all in on foldable devices. After launching the triple-folding Mate XT last year, it’s following up with its first folding PC, the MateBook Fold.

To be clear, while this is Huawei’s first folding PC, it’s by no means the world's first folding PC. Lenovo beat Huawei to the punch by a good 5 years with the ThinkPad X1 Fold.

At any rate, at the heart of the MateBook Fold is its 18-inch foldable OLED display, which has a resolution of 3296 x 2472 pixels, a maximum brightness of 1,600 nits, and supports the P3 colour space. When folded, the 18-inch screen turns into two 13-inch displays with one acting as the main display and the other as a virtual keyboard. A wireless Bluetooth keyboard is also provided.

What’s more impressive are its dimensions and weight. It’s just 7.3mm thin when unfolded, and 14.9mm thick when folded. The weight is a mere 1.16kg. That’s as light as, if not lighter, than many contemporary ultraportable laptops.

Huawei did not disclose what processor powers the MateBook Fold, but it did say it would have 32GB of memory and up to 2TB of SSD storage. As for connectivity, it has two USB-C ports and supports Wi-Fi 6.

And since Huawei no longer has access to Windows, the MateBook Fold runs the company’s recently announced HarmonyOS for PC. Incidentally, the MateBook Fold is the first Huawei PC to run the new HarmonyOS.

The MateBook Fold is an interesting addition, not only because it’s been a while since we last saw a folding PC of this type, but also because it’s the first PC to use Huawei’s first custom OS for PCs.

Availability and pricing

The Huawei MateBook Fold is only available in China now, and prices start at 23,999 yuan (~S$4,306). Huawei didn't say if it would bring the MateBook Fold to other parts of the world.
