At its “HarmonyOS Computer Technology and Ecosystem Communication Event” in China, Huawei announced that its upcoming PCs will run HarmonyOS 5.0 OS instead of Windows. Moving forward, HarmonyOS 5.0 will form the backbone of HarmonyOS PC, with the company saying that more than 10,000 of its engineers have been working on it for the past five years.
With online reports saying that Microsoft's supply license to Huawei expired last month, leaving Huawei unable to legally produce and sell PCs with the Windows operating system, it only makes sense for it to move into this space following its success in developing its own operating system for mobile devices.
As per the event, the upgraded Smart Office suite for Huawei PCs will bring:
- Cross-device collaboration with multiple devices
- Integration with other HarmonyOS-based devices and linking with any of them
- Under AI, Huawei announced that HarmonyOS PCs will integrate DeepSeek and Pangu AI’s large language models (LLMs).
Much like Copilot+-enabled devices, those running on HarmonyOS 5.0 OS will also have AI capabilities, security enhancements, and look to improve interoperability efficiency as one thing Huawei was always proud about was its ability to drag and drop text, images, videos, and songs, to paste, transfer, and share them with connected devices including PCs and phones
During the event, Huawei added that the first HarmonyOS PCs would launch in China on 19 May.
