Google Gemini might power AI features on the Apple iPhone

Apple is said to be discussing a deal with Google to let Gemini power AI features on the iPhone.

Apple is said to be looking beyond its search engine deal with Google to have the latter's Gemini engine power AI features on its iPhone.

Sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that Apple and Google are in "active negotiations" to license Gemini to power some new AI features coming to the iOS 18 and the iPhone this year.

Both companies have yet to decide on the terms or branding of the AI deal, or how the deal would be rolled out. Apple is also said to have held recent discussions with OpenAI about a potential deal.

For those who are unfamiliar with Gemini, it is Google's “most capable and general" AI model yet which was built from the ground up to be multimodal and scalable to run on almost everything from data centres to mobile devices. The Pixel 8 Pro will be the first smartphone engineered to run Gemini Pro, a model best suited for scaling across a wide range of tasks.

Apple revealed during its earnings report last month that it is "excited to share the details" of its ongoing AI work later this year. Bloomberg claimed in July 2023 that Apple is testing a ChatGPT-like tool and other generative AI tech.

Recent reports suggest that Apple might preview an enhanced Siri with generative AI at WWDC 2024 in June. The iPhone maker acquired Canadian AI startup DarwinAI earlier this year, which specialised in making AI systems smaller and faster. It adds to the list of 32 AI startups that Apple purchased last year.
