Canon EOS M
Canon's first mirrorless camera brings a lot of advantages - superb DSLR-quality images, a beautiful, solid body and a responsive touch-screen. Canon DSLR users can mount their existing EF and EF-S lenses using the optional EF-EOS M mount adapter. But the camera's auto-focus is sluggish, the battery life is low and the external flash only comes with the most expensive kit. While some might like it, we wouldn't recommend it for the general user.

Canon EOS 650D
Looking for an entry-level DSLR? The Canon 650D is an all-round capable entry-level DSLR, and the first DSLR in the world to come with a touch-screen. Even though the 650D comes with a hybrid AF that combines the auto-focus technologies of DSLR and digital compact cameras, the experience of shooting in live view still leaves something to be desired, so don't expect to use the monitor to shoot like you would with a mirrorless or compact camera. But when used like a traditional DSLR performance is punchy and the images turn out well.

Canon IXUS 500 HS
The diminutive IXUS 500 HS comes with a 12x optical zoom, 10MP sensor, 28mm wide-angle lens and 3" LCD display. The IXUS 510 HS is $50 more at the show at $449 (U.P. $499), and is nearly identical except for its 3.2" touchscreen. Unlike the majority of digital compacts today, the two cameras record to microSD cards, so grab the free card Canon is offering.

Fujifilm (Hall 4B, Booth 4D10)
Fujifilm X-E1
The Fujifilm X-E1 is the slimmed down version of the X-Pro1. The X-E1 is smaller than the X-Pro1, it loses the optical viewfinder but retains an electronic viewfinder. It also manages to squeeze in a built-in flash, something the X-Pro1 lacked. While the X-E1 will be more affordable than the X-Pro1, it doesn't mean that Fujifilm skimped on this camera - the specs still pack a surprising punch like the same 16MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS sensor and image processing engine found in the X-Pro1.

Fujifilm XF1
Not quite the replacement for last year's X10 compact, the XF1 is a new premium compact with a beautiful retro-inspired look. But the XF1 is not just a good-looker, it also packs a bright f/1.8-f/4.9 Fujinon lens with a 2/3" EXR CMOS sensor, and a sturdy body made from aluminium with faux leather.

Nikon 1 J2
The Nikon 1 J2 is a compact mirrorless system camera with extremely quick auto-focus and frame-rates, helping you catch the action as it happens. Nikon D600
The Nikon D600 is the latest and most affordable full-frame DSLR on the market today. It comes with a 24MP sensor, shoots at a maximum of 5 frames per second, has 39 AF points, an ISO range of 100 to 25,600 and dual SD card slots. You might or might not mind how all the AF points are bunched together in the middle so try it before you buy it.

Samsung NX1000
