Taiwanese chipset maker MediaTek clearly wants a larger pie of the mobile chipset market as it launched two new tablet processors over the weekend.
The two new processors, the 64-bit quad-core MT8163 and MT8735, were unveiled at the Hong Kong Electronics Fair two days ago. The MT8163 is designed to be used as a WI-Fi solution for tablets with its support for Wi-Fi 5GHz Dual-Band. It is also optimized for Android 5.1 Lollipop and H.265 (HEVC) hardware decoding.
The more capable MT8735 is able to support 6-mode LTE networks (both FDD and TDD), HSPA+, TD-SCDMA, CDMA2000 and EDGE. MediaTek claims that this chipset is able to deliver 20% more performance with 10% less power consumption than competing chipsets. Both processors are stated to be used in entry to mid-range consumer tablet devices from this month in China and other Asian markets.
Earlier this year at Mobile World Congress 2015, MediaTek took the wraps off two processors - the MT8173 and the 64-bit octa-core MT6753 - for the mobile device market.
