MediaTek is on a roll at this year's MWC with not one, but two new processors aimed at mobile devices. It achieved another world's first with the quad-core MT8173 which features an ARM Cortex-A72 processor for tablets.
Designed with a 64-bit multi-core big.LITTLE architecture, the MT8173 combines two Cortex-A72 CPUs and two Cortex-A53 CPUs to deliver a premium tablet experience while maximizing battery performance. According to MediaTek, the MT8173 offers six times the performance of the MT8125 released in 2013. Other platform features include:
Big cores and LITTLE cores can run at full speed at the same time for peak performance requirement
Performance of up to 2.4GHz
Supports OpenGL ES 3.1, OpenCL for future applications with Imagination PowerVR GX6250 GPU
20MP camera ISP with video face beautify and LOMO effects
The MT8173 is available for manufacturers now and is expected to be powering commercial tablets in the second half of this year.
