WhatsApp will stop supporting older iOS phones starting from 5 May 2025 onwards.
Over at WhatsApp’s official Help Center microsite, the instant messaging service said that by next year, only iOS 15.1 and newer versions of the iPhone’s operating system will be supported.

For now, WhatsApp is supported on iOS 12 or later devices. That gives users an ample five months to get their iPhones sufficiently updated (that’s not likely since iPhones are easy to keep up to date, but you’ll never know).
This was also verified by WhatsApp fan site WABetaInfo. The site’s testers encountered an update notification when trying out a beta version of WhatsApp, which informed users that “this version of iOS” would no longer be supported alongside instructions on updating the iPhone’s firmware.
WhatsApp sporadically updates its compatibility by putting the information on its website, as seen with its previous update, where the cut-off was iOS 12.1.
For reference, Apple’s phone operating system is now iOS 18 (as of writing), with iOS 18.1 featuring Apple Intelligence update and iOS 18.2 slated to come with notifications that tell you your iPhone’s estimated charging time.
On the other hand, Apple’s iOS 15 was launched in 2021, so it will be almost four years old when WhatsApp updates its compatibility in 2025. iOS 12 is even older, having launched in 2018.
