The S Pen may be introduced as an external accessory for the Galaxy S8

Is this the first sign of Samsung merging the Galaxy S and Note lineup?

Since its introduction in 2011, the S Pen has been the exclusive feature of Samsung's Galaxy Note series. However, a Chinese report claims that the S Pen may be coming to the Galaxy S series next year.

While it had been rumored that Samsung was testing a prototype of the Galaxy S8 with an integrated S Pen, the company has shelved plans and is now considering to include the S Pen as an external accessory for the Galaxy S8.

As there is speculation of a 6-inch Galaxy S8 Plus model, a S Pen may come in handy for the user to doodle on the extra screen estate. If the Galaxy S series will have support for the S Pen, it could potentially cannibalize the Galaxy Note series. Another possibility would be Samsung merging both the Galaxy S and Note series as an overall strategy to streamline its portfolio and focus on quality rather than quantity.
