The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has announced a new, faster charging version of the Qi wireless charging standard called Qi2 25W.
Previously known as Qi v2.2.1, Qi2 25W delivers “nearly 70% more power than the original Qi2.” WPC says the Apple iPhone and major Android smartphones will join the Qi2 ecosystem for the first time with this launch.
While adoption of Qi2 has been relatively slow over the past two years, WPC believes this upgrade will mark a turning point. Describing the momentum behind Qi2 25W as “incredible”, WPC revealed that 14 devices – including receivers and transmitters – successfully completed Qi2 25W certification testing during a limited launch last week.
WPC also noted that “the number of devices in the Qi2 25W certification queue for launch is unprecedented”, with several hundred devices lined up for full-scale certification testing.
Qi2 was announced in November 2023 to streamline the wireless charging user experience by unifying wireless charging under a single global standard. It is built on Apple’s MagSafe technology for improved energy efficiency and faster charging. So far, only the iPhone 12 through iPhone 16 series, along with the HMD Skyline, support the Qi2 wireless charging.
