The Best Mobile Phone to Buy Now

Note: We've refreshed our recommendations to reflect new and worthy phones released and tested by us.

When it comes to getting a new smartphone, everyone has a different wish-list. Some people might have a preference for a brand, while others prioritise a good camera over the processor. With new phones released by major manufacturers every year, it can be hard to keep track of every model that enters the market. If you're looking to upgrade your existing phone, we've cut through the noise and compiled a list of the latest phone releases to help you decide.  Some notable releases so far are the iPhone 14 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and Google Pixel 7 Pro.

The Apple Camp

Apple's latest release is the iPhone 14 line up. The biggest noticeable change was on the iPhone 14 Pro, with a new feature called Dynamic Island. Dynamic island interacts with the now pill shape cut out to display useful interactions and information when using different applications. Apart from changes to top of the line Apple devices, upgrades to the iPhone SE processor also make it more current for today's market.

Best Top-End Phone: iPhone 14 Pro

One of the best phones to pick up if you have the budget. The iPhone 14 Pro gets the new A16 Bionic chip that is noticeably faster than last year's A15 Bionic chip. You also get always-on display which will allow you to look at certain information without the need to pick up the phone. Of course, the new iPhone 14 Pro has a new feature called Dynamic Island that cleverly interacts with the pill-shaped notch on the display that shape shifts in response to your inputs.

Best Budget-Friendly Phone - iPhone SE (2022)

Definitely a great choice for those wanting to be in the Apple ecosystem but on a budget. The iPhone SE retains the design of the iPhone 8 from 2017, but with much more power under the hood. It comes with the A15 Bionic chip used in the iPhone 13 and still features the classic Touch ID sensor for biometric authentication.

With most Apple products, the build quality is excellent, and features an all-metal and glass body. With similar performance and functionality to its pricier siblings, the iPhone SE (2022) is a good no-frills choice for those who just need an Apple mobile phone.

Useful Accessories

With Apple removing the charging adapter from phone purchases, you'll need some necessary accessories to complete the package. Here are some of our accessory picks to protect that brand new iPhone, keeping it in great condition for months to come.

The Android Camp

With more options available, Android users are spoilt for choice when it comes to phones. With less gatekeeping, Android users have the luxury of seeing manufacturers push new technologies into Android mobile devices quicker, such as a foldable screen with the Samsung Z Flip4. With a wide array of options, there is certainly a model that will meet your needs.

Best High-End Phone - Google Pixel 7 Pro

Feel the need for a 'better everything' phone? The Google Pixel 7 Pro will fill that need with its 6.7-inch AMOLED panel that runs with variable refresh rates of 10-120Hz. The Pixel 7 Pro is also equipped with an additional 48MP telephoto shooter, that gives you 5x optical zoom. It also has zoom stabilisation which activates when reaching 15x zoom or higher. So if you're looking for a great stock Android phone with superb camera capabilities, the Google Pixel 7 Pro is a worthy choice for Android users.

Best No-Frills "Budget Flagship" - Xiaomi 12T Pro

Sure, this may be Xiaomi's most expensive T-series phone ever, but it's still the most affordable among phones of its class. The Xiaomi 12T Pro offers a late-2022 flagship processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1) and sets itself apart from rivals with a 200MP primary camera (Samsung ISOCELL HP1 sensor), a 2,712 x 1,220 pixels resolution display, and boasts a flagship-worthy 120Hz refresh rate. It still satisfies demanding users with its 5,000mAh battery and 120W fast-charging, especially if you're more into making the phone work for you and not the other way around.

Best Overall for 2023 (Android) - Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

It's a little early into 2023, but the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra already checks the boxes as an ideal Android smartphone. You're getting one of the latest RAM, UFS storage, and chipset types for performance, paired with a clear and vibrant AMOLED display. There's also the option to use its built-in stylus for extra navigation perks. It also has a big 5,000mAh battery with 45W fast charging for quick top-offs and long uptimes (yes, we've tested it and it's astonishingly good). All these, on an operating system that's intuitive to understand and customise.

It will be hard for other 2023 flagships to come close, but we're happy to wait and see what else can beat the Galaxy S23 Ultra.
