Sony is said to be working on a new handheld gaming console to rival the Nintendo Switch.

According to Bloomberg, Sony will build on the PlayStation Portal and design a portable gaming console that can play PS5 games natively without the need for a Wi-Fi connection.

The PlayStation Portal, which was announced last year and only recently available in Singapore, was initially limited to streaming games from the PlayStation 5 over Wi-Fi.

Sony recently rolled out a major update which enables the PlayStation Portal to stream select titles directly from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog without users having to turn on their PS5s.

As exciting as this sounds, Bloomberg says Sony's new handheld gaming console is still "years away from launch". More crucially, it's doubtful if Sony can catch up in the portable gaming console space especially when Nintendo is expected to unveil the successor to the Switch in Q1 2025
