Sony is enhancing the PlayStation Portal (read our review here) with a major new feature: cloud streaming. Initially limited to streaming games from your PlayStation 5 over Wi-Fi, the Portal can now stream select titles directly from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog – without having to turn on your PS5 – as part of a system update last week.

This new function, currently available in beta, is exclusive to PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. According to PlayStation’s blog, to stream games at 720p, a 7Mbps connection is needed, while 1080p will require at least 13Mbps. However, certain features like Game Trials, voice chat, and in-game purchases are still off the table for now, and PS4 and PS3 games won’t be streamable.

Alongside cloud streaming, the update brings some audio tweaks, including a lower minimum volume and new options for adjusting PlayStation Link device settings directly from the Portal.

More importantly, the update fundamentally changes the PlayStation Portal capabilities – adding another layer of playability and overall value of the handheld. That said, PlayStation cloud streaming is not available in Asia (except for Japan) yet but PS5 gamers can work around it, for example, by setting up a US account with a PS Plus subscription.
