Singapore tech luminary Sim Wong Hoo passes away, aged 67

Local tech industry heavyweight Sim Wong Hoo has passed away peacefully according to an SGX filing from Creative Technology, the company he founded in 1981.

Sim first gained recognition for the development and sale of customised PCs adapted for the Chinese language, including enhanced audio capabilities that allowed the devices to produce speech and melodies. This then led to the development and sale of the Sound Blaster sound card and led to Creative dominating the PC sound card market for the next two decades.

The company then moved into the development, design, and sale of digital entertainment products, with their soundbars and various Super X-Fi enabled headphones and earbuds being particularly popular. In fact, Sim had a large role in shaping the Super X-Fi technology that won our Innovation Awards in 2019.

According to the statement, the company expressed its sorrow over the death of Sim and acknowledged its gratitude to him for his contributions to the company during his tenure as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Company.

During this transition period, the company has appointed Lee Kheng Nam, Lead Independent Non-Executive Director, as acting Chairman, Ng Kai Wa, Independent Non-Executive Director, as acting Vice Chairman, and Song Siow Hui, President of the Company’s Creative Labs Business Unit, interim Chief Executive Officer.
