Cheaper can always be better. Just like the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G just announced today (5 January 2023) by Samsung Singapore.
As the follow-up to last year’s Galaxy A13 5G, the new Galaxy A14 5G now offers an upgraded 13MP front camera and now supports Full HD+ resolution (2,400 x 1,080 pixels) at 90Hz refresh rate. This is up from the predecessor’s HD only (720p) fidelity.
For its display panel, The Galaxy A14 5G uses an 6.6-inch PLS LCD (plane-to-line switching), which is on par with its predecessor’s TFT LCD quality (thin film transistor).
Also, since it’s an early 2023 phone, it comes with One UI 5 (Android 13) instead of the older One UI 4 (Android 12) out of the box. A key perk is the upgraded Security and Privacy Dashboard that comes with its operating system, making it easy for casual phone owners to take charge of their privacy settings and disable unwanted trackers.
Samsung also partnered with Google to make Google Meet more integrated into the Galaxy A14 5G’s video call capabilities.
While Samsung Singapore didn’t say which chipset we’re getting with the local Galaxy A14 5G sets yet, the phones come with either an Exynos 1300 or MediaTek’s Dimensity 700 processor – both are entry-level chips to fulfil basic phone needs and offer 5G compatibility.
The rest of its specifications are imported from the A13. You get a chonky 5,000mAh battery with 15W wired fast-charging, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, and the same triple rear lens combo (50MP main with PDAF, 2MP macro, and 2MP depth cam).
It packs 128GB storage onboard, but MicroSD card lovers would be happy to hear that the Galaxy A14 5G has a slot for it, up to 1TB extra if needed. It even has a 3.5mm headphone jack for wired audio too. What’s not clear is its NFC availability.
The U.S. starts Samsung Galaxy A14 5G’s retail on 12 January 2023. Singapore will get the phone starting in February 2023, with Samsung Singapore sharing more details closer to its street launch. Colourways available globally are Black, Silver, Light Green, and Dark Red.
13 February 2023 update: The Samsung Galaxy A14 5G is now available with an official retail price of S$318 in Dark Red, Black, and Silver. Interested buyers can find the device at Samsung's official Lazada and Shopee storefronts, the physical Samsung Experience Stores, the Samsung Online Store, as well as selected consumer electronics retailers around the island (Best Denki, Challenger, Courts, Gain City, Harvey Norman).
