The Apple iPhone 17 series could come with a vapour chamber to help with heat dissipation and cooling.
Chinese tech site MyDrivers shared that the entire iPhone 17 lineup - the iPhone 17, the iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max - will come with vapour chamber heatsinks to minimise thermal throttling and maintain consistent performance.
MyDrivers' claims run contrary to what analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in August 2024. Back then, the analyst said the special vapour chamber cooling system would be exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro Max while the rest of the iPhone 17 models would use graphite sheets.
Using customised vapour chamber cooling systems is nothing new in the smartphone scene. Numerous companies have done so, including the Galaxy S24 series (which has a 1.9x bigger vapour chamber cooling system than the Galaxy S23), the Oppo Reno13 series, the Redmagic 9S Pro, and the Sharp Aquos R9.
Reports of the thermal design upgrade coming to future iPhones surfaced after iPhone 15 users experienced overheating issues in 2023. A software update has been released to fix the issue, but some users continue to experience overheating on their devices.
Apple tried to minimise the issue on the iPhone 16 Pro models by using an aluminium frame. The company states the aluminium frame helps with thermal management.
