Apple's first in-house radio modem, the C1 chip does not come with mmWave 5G and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims to know the reason.
Kuo believes Apple omitted mmWave 5G on the C1 chip due to concerns over power consumption. He says the support for mmWave 5G "isn't particularly challenging", but Apple has yet to figure out how to deliver it reliably and efficiently. Apple is apparently not interested in performance if it comes at the cost of high power consumption. This is why Apple is proud of the C1 chip as "the most power-efficient modem ever on an iPhone".
On this note, Kuo added that Apple plans to improve power consumption, mobile network speeds, and include support for mmWave 5G on the C1 successor. It is currently under development and planned for mass production next year.
Bloomberg reported last week that Apple plans to integrate future C-series modems into the A-series chips and it should happen as early as 2028.
For now, iPhone 16E users shouldn't feel like they are missing out as mmWave is not supported locally. Additionally, we ran some speed tests on the iPhone 16E and found the speeds to match those of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16.
