A week of Mac announcements won’t be complete without new MacBook Pros and here they are. Joining the new lineup of M4-powered Macs are updated versions of the 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros.

These are spec-bump updates so there's only small updates to the hardware. Display sizes are the same and both 14 and 16-inch models continue to feature the excellent Liquid Retina XDR display.

However, the displays are a little brighter and go up to 1,000 nits when showing SDR content (up from 600 nits). There’s also the option to spec the systems with a nano-texture finish to reduce glare and reflections.

The notch in the display is still present but it now houses an improved 12MP Centre Stage camera – the same used in the new iMac

As for connectivity, the base 14-inch model gains an additional USB-C Thunderbolt 4 port on its right side. The more powerful M4 Pro and M4 Max models will support the newer and faster Thunderbolt 5 standard.

M4 Max? Yes, Apple is also debuting a new chip today. The M4 Max is now the most powerful M4 chip in the family and in it's full-fat form features a 16-core CPU, a 40-core GPU, and support for a maximum of 128GB of memory. Speaking of memory, all MacBook Pros will come with at least 16GB of memory as standard.

With today's updates, the base model 14-inch MacBook Pro now comes with 16GB of memory as standard and looks like an even enticing proposition, particularly if you are casual user who wants a machine that offers a bit more performance and features than a MacBook Air.
