Apple’s week of Mac announcements begins with a new iMac. Alright, it’s more “updated” than “new”, but the updates are pretty significant so let’s get into them now.

To start, the iMac is now powered by the M4 chip. The base model comes with an 8-core CPU and GPU, and there’s a more powerful variant with a 10-core CPU and GPU.

The base model will have two USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports, whereas the 10-core models will come with four USB-C Thunderbolt ports and a Gigabit Ethernet port.

Also, for the first time, the base model iMac will come with 16GB of memory. No more fussing over whether to upgrade your memory or not. But if you wish to upgrade, you can spec your iMac with 24GB or 32GB of memory. Storage starts at 256GB or 512GB but can be upgraded up to 2TB.

The display is unchanged, which means it’s a 24-inch 4.5K Retina display. Those wanting a more glare-free experience can opt for a display with nano-texture glass. However, note that the nano-texture glass is a S$300 option and it’s only available on the 10-core models.

Another notable feature is the 12MP webcam The new webcam enables a feature called Desk View where the ultra-wide camera can simultaneously show the user and a top-down view of their desk.

And at long last, the Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad have all ditched their Lightning ports for USB-C ones. This should greatly simplify charging.

It won’t be an iMac if there aren’t new colours and the M4 iMac is available in seven colours: green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue, and silver. I haven’t seen them in the flesh, but they look punchy and vivid in the press photos. I’m not sure which one is my favourite, but green and orange looks mighty fine.
