Besides equipping the M4 MacBook Pro with a display that goes up to 1,000 nits for showing SDR content, Apple might have quietly upgraded the display with quantum dot technology.
Ross Young, the CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), shared on X that the M4 MacBook Pro uses quantum dot for the first time. Previous MacBook Pros utilised red KSF phosphor films.
Young said Apple avoided using quantum dot films in the past because it contains the toxic element cadmium and goes against the company's environmentalism efforts. Furthermore, KSF phosphor films are more cost efficient.
However, modern quantum dot films no longer not use cadmium and are said to offer as good as, if not better performance than KSF phosphor films. Ross said "the latest Cd-free QD films are very efficient, feature as good or better color gamut and better motion performance".
We recently reviewed the M4 MacBook Pro and found its display to be fantastic. It has great contrast, and is sharp and crisp.
Quantum dot technology has been used in high-end TV models for many years such as the Samsung QLED TVs.
