Beyond the Southern Islands with AMD's Radeon HD 8000 Series
According to CPU World, information gleaned from AMD's latest beta graphics drivers revealed a few new device IDs. Some of these IDs seem to point to the possible lineup from AMD's Radeon HD 8000 GPU series. Read on to find out the details.
According to CPU World, information gleaned from AMD's latest beta graphics drivers revealed a few new device IDs. Some of these IDs seem to point to what may be in store for consumers from AMD's Radeon HD 8000 series of GPUs that are named Sea Islands.

There are also a number of IDs for what looks like the next generation of Sea Islands GPUs, code-named Mars (9 models), Oland (3 models) and Venus (4 models). 3DCenter speculated that Venus will be used for high-end GPUs, and it is expected to have approximately 5.1 billion transistors, an increment of about 19% from that of the AMD Radeon HD 7970 GPU. The most powerful single-GPU card could be the AMD Radeon HD 8970, with a speculated 30-40% performance improvement over the AMD Radeon HD 7900 series graphics cards.
Oland is expected to be the name given to family of graphics cards to replace the Pitcairn series of the Southern Islands. With an anticipated 3.2 billion transistors, versus the 2.8 billion transistor count of a Radeon HD 7800 series GPU, it is expected to have a performance increase of around 20%. The top-performance card from this series will be the AMD Radeon HD 8870.
Finally, the mainstream cards will feature the Mars GPU with an expected transistor-count from 1.7 to 2.0 billion. The best solution provided by this core will be the Radeon HD 8770, with an expected performance boost of 35% over the Cape Verde GPUs.
