AMD's new Radeon RX 7600 XT is a budget-friendly GPU with limited 1440p gaming capabilities

It's essentially a souped-up version of the Radeon RX 7600

AMD’s latest Radeon 7000 series GPU is an upgraded budget-level model that’s slated for a 24 Januaryrelease – the Radeon RX 7600 XT. Priced at US$329, the graphics card offers a bump in performance over the Radeon RX 7600 (review link) – which was catered for 1080p gaming – and could be the answer to affordable 1440p gaming.

If you had been on the lookout for budget-friendly cards that don't shy away from 1440p gaming, AMD's previous attempt with the Radeon RX 7600, priced at US$269, was a bit of a letdown. It came with a modest 8GB of memory, which felt somewhat limiting. However, AMD seems to have taken note, doubling down on this aspect in the RX 7600 XT by packing it with 16GB of memory. This is a curious decision, especially considering the RX 7700 XT comes with 12GB. The move to position the RX 7600 XT for 1440p gaming is bold, to say the least.

The hardware specs of the RX 7600 XT mirror its forerunner in many ways, maintaining 32 compute units, 2048 stream processors, and a 128-bit memory bus. AMD has, however, revved up the base and boost clock speeds and nudged the total board power to 190w, a step up from the 165 watts in the RX 7600.

According to AMD’s presentation slides, the RX 7600 XT will deliver over 60fps at 1440p in titles like Starfieldand Assassin’s Creed Mirage. But based on AMD's own data, the GPU is still essentially a 1080p card first and foremost, with the potential to handle 1440p only in certain games.

Comparatively, AMD's data pits the RX 7600 XT against NVIDIA's US$299 RTX 4060 (review link), showing competitive performance at both 1080p and 1440p in some games. I’ll reserve my judgment until we get a hold of a card for a comprehensive review.

The Radeon RX 7600 XT will be available from 24 January onwards from board partners like ASUS, Gigabyte, PowerColour, Sapphire and XFX.
