Preview: MSI Z77A-GD65 (Intel Z77)
The MSI Z77A-GD65 is a good looking board featuring the Intel Z77 Express chipset and boasts of MSI's Military Class III components for reliability and durability. In Full Military Class III Glory
With Intel's Ivy Bridge processors expected to be officially launched on the 29th April, it's time we geared up on more Intel Z77 motherboard previews to whet your appetite. The Intel Z77 Express chipset will be the main component of most DIY-class motherboards even though other variations of the 7-series chipsets exist like the H77 and B75 chipsets for system integrators. We've last showcased the ASUS P8Z77-V Deluxe sometime early last month along with the main highlights one can expect out of the Z77 chipset. Over the following week, we'll be continuing that momentum to showcase more motherboards.
Some of our more savvy readers might notice reviews published by some tech portals, but at this point of time, we're bound by Intel's NDA terms to not reveal any Ivy Bridge related performance matters. In fact, most of those reviews would be based on Sandy Bridge processors. Now who's going to be getting existing processors with new boards when every DIY user knows that new processors are arriving shortly to replace the existing Sandy Bridge CPUs at similar price points? For that reason, our 7-series chipset based reviews will be conducted on Ivy Bridge processors when they are officially available in retail.
Having established the basic details, today we'll be taking a closer look at the MSI Z77A-GD65. Since it is based on the Intel Z77 Express chipset and the same LGA1155 socket (thankfully there are no drastic changes in VRM requirements for the new processors), the board will support the upcoming Ivy Bridge processors using the 22nm fabrication process or the current Sandy Bridge processors fabricated from the 32nm process technology. The motherboard has a pleasant look due to its blue and black color scheme and it bears a striking resemblance to the MSI X79A-GD65 (8D). Besides looks, both boards share the fact that they feature Military Class III components which comprises SFC (super ferrite chokes), Hi-c capacitors and the use of solid capacitors (which has become a norm in most boards).
MSI is committed to build up its range of motherboards featuring its Military Class III components. The MSI Z77-GD65 is the second generation of these boards as MSI first featured these components in their Intel X79 motherboards.
Further to that, MSI Military Class III standard also requires the use of the next generation of DrMOS - DrMOS II that provides an integrated double thermal protection to maximize the lifespan of components. To find out how the different MSI Military Class standards stack up, we've compared them in an earlier article when it was first introduced. Given the board's Military Class III components, MSI has implemented rather hefty heatsinks as parts of its cooling solutions for its VRM components as well as the board's Z77 chipset.
This beefy looking heatsink that sits over the MOSFETs for cooling purposes has a row of SFCs in front of it. A heatpipe runs behind the heatsink that also makes contact the adjacent heatsink block that cools even more MOSFET ICs.
The back of the heatsink reveals the 'umbilical cord' that connects that pair of heatsinks cooling the board's VRM solution.
At a glance, the LGA1155 CPU socket is clear of obstructions; however, enthusiasts' (read large and beefy) CPU coolers will encroach on the nearer DIMM slots.
While MSI has retained their well recognized Easy Button 3 which consists of the power, reset and OC Genie buttons, for some odd reason, they've been shifted fro the usual lower half of the board to the upper corner. While it makes sense if the board is used an open environment without a casing, once the board is settled within a chassis and fully wired up, this corner becomes almost unusable. We're a bit disappointed with MSI's decision on this aspect, but this move has better allowed them to place all other onboard motherboard connectors on the bottom of the board. More on that later.
The standard trio of on-board buttons and probably the most popular of the three is the OC Genie button. To the top right of it is a series of LEDs corresponding to the active number of power phases in operation.
The LEDs will light up according to the number of power phases the CPU is using. As you can tell, the board uses an 8-phase power design. This will be a useful visual reference for advanced users wanting to know the system loading levels and could come in handy during overclocking exercises.
Other Mobo Features and Usual Suspects
Looking at the lower half of the board, there is official support for PCI Gen 3.0 bus standard (courtesy of the new processor) as well as USB 3.0 that's available natively on the new chipsets. As such, there's an absence of third-party USB 3.0 controllers on the MSI Z77A-GD65 motherboard. Of course some boards continue to support third-party USB 3.0 controllers to provide users with more high-speed connectivity options such as the ASUS P8Z77-V Deluxe, which supports ASUS USB 3.0 Boost UASP mode, courtesy of ASMedia. Having said that, MSI did feel the need to buff up the number of SATA 6Gbps ports supported by the chipset (which is a paltry total of two), by integrating an ASMedia AMS1061 controller to bump the the total count to four.
The board sports three PCIe Gen3 PEG slots (easily seen by their huge latches on this board) and four PCIe 2.0 x1 slots. The board has plenty of room for a multi-GPU setup.
There are a total of eight SATA connectors - they are divided into two Intel 6Gbps ones (two rightmost connectors in white), four Intel 3Gbps connectors (black ones), and two 6Gbps connectors from the ASMedia AMS1061 controller (two leftmost ones, also in white). On a side note, this photo also shows you an internal USB 3.0 connector (to the right of the SATA ports) that is driven by the Intel Z77 chipset.
There is a Multi-BIOS switch located behind the second set of white SATA 6Gbps connectors. With the board in vertical orientation, flicking the switch left will toggle BIOS ROM A while BIOS ROM B is toggled when the switch is shifted right,
As we mentioned earlier, MSI has repositioned their well-like Easy Button 3 function and this has allowed MSI to fit in a slew of of headers for front/rear panel connectivity in one area. This gives the board a cleaner feel and you don't have to think twice where to find these headers. Cable management too is easier and better managed. The downside however is the difficult to reach placement of the Easy Button 3 function if the board is installed within a chassis. There are pros and cons to either design and MSI has to see if this is equally well received by users.
From the left are the front panel headers for audio and TPM. To the rightmost, we spot USB 2.0 and 3.0 expansion headers. They allow the connection of additional USB devices with their corresponding USB brackets (which are provided in the package). With MSI's SuperCharger application installed on the operating system, these connectors will provide quicker USB charging. There's even FireWire if you still need that option.
The Z77 chipset supports the integrated GPU of the Intel LGA1155 processors; hence, we see VGA, DVI, and DisplayPort outputs and any two of the video display ports can be used at the same time. The combination mouse-keyboard PS/2 port is a nod to gamers who crave for enhanced mouse sensitivity in games.
Initial Thoughts
We are fairly impressed with this high-end showing from MSI. The board offers basic functionality that has been enhanced by the presence of a backup BIOS in case of corruption to the BIOS ROM. MSI has also added value by featuring its Military Class III VRM components to burnish its overclocking abilities.
