Received a Fitbit as a gift for Christmas? Many apparently did

Fitbit's app jumped 20 spots to the top of the Apple App Store on Christmas Day, which suggests that many people received a Fitbit wearable as a gift. Is that enough to keep Apple and Xiaomi at bay?

Fitbit looks set to maintain its leadership position in the wearable market thanks to the festive season.

According to Quartz, Fitbit's app jumped 20 spots from Christmas Eve to the top of the free iOS apps list on the Apple App Store on Christmas Day. Although downloads do not necessarily give an accurate picture of actual sales, the surge in downloads highlights the possibility of many people receiving Fitbit devices as a gift and setting them up on Christmas.

The fourth quarter has generally seen the best sales; Fitbit reportedly sold 5.28 million wearables in Q4 2014 which was more than the first three quarters of 2014 combined. That's an estimated 250% increase in revenue compared to the same quarter the year before.

IDC recently reported that Fitbit is the market leader in wearables with 22% share in Q3 2015. This is followed closely by Apple and Xiaomi.
