According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the next Apple Watch SE could come with a hard plastic case.

In his weekly newsletter, Gurman said that it is “sounding increasingly likely” that the next Apple Watch SE would have a hard plastic case instead of aluminium.

He reasoned that using plastic would not only keep costs down. This in turn could appeal to parents who are looking to get an Apple Watch for their children. Furthermore, plastic “could allow for a better array of colors”.

Weeks ago, Apple launched its “Apple Watch For Your Kids” website which shows parents how an Apple Watch might be helpful to their children. Parents can text their children, keep track of their location, and more.

This is not the first time Apple made a plastic device. Those who have stuck around long enough would probably remember the iPhone 5C from 2013. It was supposed to be a more affordable alternative to the iPhone 5S, but its high price meant that it was a commercial flop.

The success of the rumoured Apple Watch SE will hinge greatly on how low a price Apple can achieve. The Apple Watch SE currently retails for US$249 (S$382.50 in Singapore). Many believe Apple could have a winner on its hands if it can get it under US$200 (S$265), and if it doesn’t lose too many features versus the standard Apple Watch.

Apple hasn’t announced when its next event will be, but there’s a good chance it will be in the second week of September – likely 10 September.
