The Google Pixel Watch.
Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology might be coming to the Google Pixel Watch 2.
A source told Android Authority that the Google Pixel Watch 2 could come with UWB thanks to the inclusion of an NXP SR100T UWB module. While the source did not reveal any UWB-related features, Android Authority speculates that UWB technology would allow the following use cases on the Google Pixel Watch 2:
- precise device finding
- unlocking cars via Digital Car Key
- transfer of music playback to the Pixel Tablet or future UWB-enabled Nest devices
Google's March 2023 update for the Pixel Watch and Pixel 7 phones includes support for UWB digital car keys. With Google's UWB digital car keys, users can unlock/lock or start their compatible car models without having to take out their devices.
Aside from UWB, the Google Pixel Watch 2 is likely to use the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 platform. This was also reported by 9to5Google in June. The use of a newer 4nm chip means that the Pixel Watch 2 could support new low-power states (e.g. Deep Sleep and Hibernation), which would improve power efficiency and therefore battery life.
On the topic of battery life, the Pixel Watch 2 is said to have a slightly bigger battery capacity (306mAh) which is a minor 4% increase from the 294mAh battery on the Pixel Watch.
Other purported specs include a new panel made by Samsung Display, and faster software updates via support for seamless updates.
Google is expected to unveil the Pixel Watch 2 alongside the Pixel 8 phones in October. If and when the Pixel Watch arrives in the market, these updated specs should put it in a better position to compete against the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Watch6 and Apple Watch Series 9.
