The next-generation Apple AirTag is getting a significant upgrade in its key feature, Precision Finding.

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg revealed in his latest Power On newsletter that the upcoming AirTags will be equipped with a new ultra-wideband (UWB) chip that is comparable to the second-generation UWB chip on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16.

As a quick recap, the second-generation UWB chip on the iPhone 15 /16 allows it to connect to another device with the same chip at three times the range as before.

Since the current AirTag with U1 UWB chip can be tracked with Precision Finding within a distance of 10 to 30m, we could be looking at a tracking distance of 30 to 90m on the next-generation AirTag. This means Precision Finding will have a much wider range, making it easier for users to locate their missing items.

Gurman reported in May that the second-generation AirTag is expected to launch "around the middle of next year".

The current AirTag was unveiled in April 2021 and is available for purchase in Singapore for S$45 or S$149 in a pack of four. You can find AirTags on Lazada, Shopee, and the Apple Online Store.
