The only update for the Apple Watch Series 9 could just be its chipset

Warning, the Apple Watch Series 9 might just be a spec bump update with a new chipset.

Consumers should not expect anything more than a processor update for the upcoming Apple Watch Series 9.

Weibo leaker "Instant Digital" claims the Apple Watch Series 9 is "basically unchanged" from the Apple Watch Series 8 other than a new chipset.

The new chipset, likely to be called, S9 is said to be based on the A15 Bionic chip which was first used in the iPhone 13 Pro models.

Apple has been using the same processor albeit different marketing names for its smartwatches since the Series 6. The S6, S7 and S8 chips are virtually identical and are based on the 7nm A13 Bionic chip from the iPhone 11.

Having said that, the new S9 chip should still provide a boost in performance and power efficiency, which could mean a slightly longer battery life.

The minor update to the Apple Watch Series 9 was first reported by Bloomberg in January when Mark Gurman said there would be performance upgrades with no design changes.

The same could be said about the Apple Watch Ultra lineup. Rumours say the second-gen model could launch in a new darker option.

While there might ostensibly be nothing new on the hardware side of things, the same cannot be said for software as watchOS 10 is a pretty significant update to the Apple Watch's interface and has been dubbed by many to be "a fairly extensive upgrade" for Apple Watch users.
