Apple reportedly dropped a major project – a pair of Mac-connected smart glasses.
Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reports that Apple cancelled the project earlier this week. Gurman describes the rumoured smart glasses as regular glasses with built-in displays.
Codenamed N107, it allegedly has advanced projectors that display information, images, and videos. Apple was also believed to be working on lenses that adjusted their tint according to what the user was doing.
The past year saw Apple dropped two other major projects, the microLED Apple Watch Ultra and the electric car. The New York Times claims that Apple wanted to divert resources to generative AI as it is critical to the future of the iPhone business, which is the main revenue driver for the company.
Despite shutting down the project, Apple is said to be still working on the technologies that power the smart glasses which include microLED-type screens. Furthermore, Bloomberg's recent report of Apple working on a version of visionOS for smart glasses indicates that the company still believes in the product category – just not for now.
