Who's got the best plan?

With all three telcos announcing their price plans for the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+, now's the time to find out who offers the best deal.

Without a contract, both phones will be available from 29th April in retail, with the Galaxy S8 retailing for S$1,148, and the Galaxy S8+ going for S$1,298. Let's find out what the phone prices are with a contract and what's your total outlay for the contract period.

Update on 20th April: We've now included Circles.Life's offer as well. Since Circles.Life is more flexible in nature with their add-ons, we will only be comparing them in two specific situations where the total two-year ownership costs are similar with other teclos - Mid-tier and High-tier using Circles.Life's Base (without number porting data bonus) and Base + 20 for 20 plans respectively. Note that unlike other telcos, Circles.Life does not tie you down with a fixed contractual period. Nevertheless, to make a fairer comparison, we'll  consider the cost of using their plan for two years as well.

Quick analysis

Generally across the board, M1 has both the best monthly plans and the best phone prices. The exception is a the top-end premium plan where StarHub has both the cheapest monthly plan and the cheapest phone prices, albeit with 1GB less data than M1.

Note that folks who opt for the premium plan are pretty much in it for the unlimited calls, which is the main selling point for extra high volume users. This is why we've not compared Circles.Life in this tier, whose primary selling point is the amount of mobile data you can get.

Having said that, Cirlces.Life seems to have a compelling option at the Mid-tier price plan comparison, if you can keep your voice call volumes low. Otherwise, M1 has a better all-round offer, and not to mention, better data roaming offers.

Things get more interesting at the High-tier price plan where M1 offers a good mix of data, call time, SMS and other selling points of their network. However, if your main concern is more mobile data, Circles.Life offers the best plan, even if you were to factor in other costs associated to get a little more talk time and SMS (but not to the extent of matching competitor plans). And you get 24GB of mobile data, which can go up to 26GB if you were to port your existing mobile number.
