In a nutshell, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are Samsung’s latest flagship smartphones. Their key features include an almost bezel-less Infinity Display with HDR support, a smart assistant named Bixby, and facial recognition for phone unlocking and selfies.

The two phones are rather identical in hardware. While the specifications sheet does not specify the processors by name, Singapore will (most likely) be receiving the Exynos 9 Series 8895 octa-core chipset, which also shares the 10nm manufacturing process used for Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 platform.

Despite the perceived vastness of the Infinity Display panel with 83% screen-to-body ratio, the 5.8-inch Galaxy S8 is actually smaller than the iPhone 6s Plus, and the massive 6.2-inch Galaxy S8+ is still slighty slimmer in width. Its 18.5:9 screen ratio really changes how the phones feel in hand.

Because of the new display, the physical Home button has been replaced with a haptic, on-screen version instead.

Samsung also prides itself for having the first pair of smartphones to come with the Mobile HDR Premium certification, which means that these devices are compatible with HDR content found on Amazon Prime and Netflix.

Bixby is a smart, contextual assistant found on the Galaxy S8 and S8+.  The contextual menu here is Hello Bixby, and there’s Bixby Voice for voice control, as well as Bixby Vision for translating street signs and menus that are not in your native languages.

The S8 and S8+ also debut a new phone-unlocking option - facial recognition. This security/privacy alternative is provided along with existing fingerprint unlock and iris unlock methods. It also helps by making the S8 and S+ take better selfies (represented by the yellow ring).

The Fingerprint Scanner and Iris Scanner are still available on the S8 and S8+, with the Iris recognition alternative being the most secure way you can lock a Galaxy S8 or S8+.

The fingerprint sensor is on the rear, right next to the rear camera housing. Be careful not to smudge the camera lens!

Cutting it really close, right?
