Apple’s 2024 iPad Pro with M4 chipset packs it all in at just 5.1mm

Apple iPad Pro (2024) with M4 chipset in 11-inch and 13-inch versions.
While the iPad Pro refresh was expected, Apple still managed to surprise the pro-tablet crowd.
The new 7th-generation Apple iPad Pro (2024) tablets come in two sizes: 11-inch and 13-inch. This slightly differs from its predecessors, which previously had 11- and 12.9-inch options.
The 13-inch version is 5.1mm thin.
More important is a series of upgrades that allowed Apple to keep the new 11-inch iPad Pro at just 5.3mm thickness and the 13-inch iPad Pro at just 5.1mm. According to Apple during its keynote, these are the thinnest Apple products the company has ever made (the Apple iPod Nano was just 0.1mm away and has been dethroned).
The display for these new iPad Pros also saw huge upgrades. Dubbed Ultra Retina XDR, Apple has brought on Tandem OLED technology (stacking two OLED panels to output graphics), 1,000-nits HDR brightness, 1,600-nits peak HDR brightness, and 10-120Hz ProMotion adaptive refresh rate. The change in OLED configuration also saw improvements to its colours, highlights, true blacks, and more.
For users who work with colour-sensitive projects, Apple also offers the optional nano-textured glass, which is said to help further reduce glare. Otherwise, the iPad Pro with M4 chipset can still be purchased with standard glass.
The new iPad Pro comes with a new Apple Silicon, but Apple skipped one generation of chipsets. Both iPad Pro variants come with the new M4 chipset, which were announced alongside these tablets. Apple said that it has 4x faster rendering performance and 1.5x faster CPU performance than Apple’s M2 silicon. We have more about the Apple Silicon M4 chipset in a separate article.
Apple also spent a chunk of its keynote to promote its in-house editing suite, which includes Final Cut Pro, a new Final Cut Camera app, and Logic Pro for iPad. We have these software updates in separate articles.
The new iPad Pro has a 12MP rear camera and four microphones for on-board recording needs. The true killer use case, however, is Adaptive True Tone Flash. Upon detecting a document, the iPad Pro’s new camera takes multiple shots and stitches them together to remove shadows via machine learning, creating the ideal softcopy version without much effort.
