Riding the WWDC 2025 wave is Chinese smartphone brand Vivo, which has decided to share more about its upcoming Vivo X Fold5 foldable smartphone in an unusual manner.

Vivo’s official Weibo account shared a post featuring a photo of its phone, positioned next to an Apple Watch Series 9. The accompanying update was written in its native language, which roughly said:

Good morning! WWDC kicks off today, and it's buzzing! As the new "Apple buddy", the (Vivo) X Fold5 is taking this opportunity to introduce some fun and practical new features that pair well with Apple products. The first one to pair with is the Apple Watch!

When the X Fold3 went on sale last year, a die-hard Apple fan became so excited that he traded in his iPhone for ours on the spot. Only when he got home did he remember that he had an Apple Watch Ultra (which costs CNY7,000+) that couldn’t connect! This isn’t an isolated case; the entire Android camp hasn't been able to solve this problem!

The X Fold5 has become the first Android phone that can connect to an Apple Watch! Not only can your Apple Watch display calls and messages from the X Fold5, but the recorded health data can also sync to the vivo Health App. Your watch is still yours, so rest assured as you switch to the X Fold5 and continue using it. How about that? Is that matchy enough? Not enough? Then, stay tuned for the next Weibo post where we'll introduce the second Apple buddy new feature: "Dual-device Interconnection" between the X Fold5 and Apple pho
nes!

Beyond its hilarious anecdotes and witty wording, the Vivo social media post reveals a wealth of details and also points to specific smartphone trends observed recently.

Firstly, the Vivo X Fold5 gaining Apple Watch compatibility isn’t a superficial pairing. The foldable device can extract metrics and data from the smartwatch and send them to its proprietary health app.

More interesting is that Vivo is going beyond phone-to-wearable when it comes to cross-platform iOS and Android behaviour, which has seen greater uptake in Chinese-made Android brands lately.

For instance, OPPO and Honor currently have O+ Connect and Honor Share, respectively. Both are high-speed, wireless file transfer systems that works across phones and tablets regardless of their iOS/Android alignment. This has evolved from Huawei’s previous iOS/Android compatibility with its wearable devices.

Finally, we gain insight into the announcement keynote of the Vivo X Fold5. In a separate Weibo upload by a Vivo product manager (Han Boxiao), the representative said the Vivo X Fold5’s China launch is scheduled for 25 June 2025, at 7 PM (China Time).

The three revealed colourways are also wordplays. Its Green variant represents “carefree”, while the White variant means “understanding” (which can be interpreted as “awareness”). The final colourway is a pun of both “titanium” and a measure of depth and worth.
