Vivo announced Funtouch OS 15 today (30 September 2024), which is the next major update to its Android reskin.

According to Vivo, it has up to 15% faster average app startup speed even in overload. Vivo said this was made possible by replacing Android’s default Fair Scheduling algorithm for its proprietary priority scheduling algorithm, which is responsible for allocating resource threads to apps.

Other changes include a newly optimised zRAM compression algorithm, which grants it 40% faster compression speeds. Vivo also managed to reduce the operating system’s GPU memory consumption for apps waiting in the background, which reduces background app load and allows more apps to be opened simultaneously.

To improve the interface’s feel and responsiveness, Vivo also granted its UI animation a dedicated channel for execution, which allegedly improves app startup response speeds by up to 20%. Vivo also increased the UI’s interactivity by adding 700 different touch scenarios to make the user experience feel like it’s an interaction with flowing water.

That change in UI is just a part of its 3,800 redesigned elements, which covers system fonts, colours, icons, and more.

Funtouch OS 15 also sees a bunch of feature additions, like built-in Link to Windows support, an AI Image Lab that can remove shadows from documents, and an upgraded Ultra Game Mode with a sidebar for performance-related tweaks, or letting your game run in a tiny window while you reply messages.

Vivo said that Funtouch OS 15 is available to Vivo X Fold3 Pro, Vivo X100 series, and iQoo 12 phones starting from mid-October 2024.

This announcement lines up nicely with Android 15's supposed launch schedule. The source code for Android 15 was uploaded to the Android Open Source Project earlier this month, which meant that brands like Vivo could begin developing their Android reskins early.
