Sony is extending its lead as the world's biggest supplier of camera sensors by acquiring Toshiba's image sensor business.

According to Reuters, sources with knowledge of the deal claim that the sale of its image sensor business is part of Toshiba's restructuring plan. The US$165 million deal is said to be finalized soon and this will include the sale of its manufacturing plant in Oita, Southern Japan.

Although Sony's mobile business is struggling to be profitable, its image sensor business has fared well this year; it achieved profits of over US$244 million which is up 164% year-on-year. Sony's image sensors are used in many smartphones today such as the Huawei Nexus 6P and Samsung Galaxy S6/S6 edge.
