Samsung to use Qualcomm's in-display fingerprint sensors for its phones in 2019?

Samsung is likely to be sourcing in-display fingerprint sensors from Qualcomm for its smartphones in 2019.

Industry sources told DigiTimes that Qualcomm has won orders to supply its next-generation ultrasonic fingerprint sensors to Samsung for the latter's midrange and flagship phones in 2019. Shipments are expected to begin in late 2018 or early 2019. To help lower production costs, Qualcomm is said to have combined resources of its ultrasonic fingerprint sensor technology lab in California with Taiwan TFT panel makers so that the sensor module process can be completed on glass panels. 

Bloomberg reported last month that Samsung has successfully integrated an in-display fingerprint sensor with the display of the Galaxy S10. At least two models of the upcoming Galaxy S10 will have the in-display fingerprint sensors. Qualcomm has been working on ultrasonic fingerprint sensors for about three years. 

The chip maker unveiled its 3D fingerprint scanner technology, Sense ID at MWC 2015. Sense ID can detect fingerprints through glass, metal and other surfaces. It will not be affected by sweat or water on the finger. In June 2017, Qualcomm announced its Fingerprint Sensors for Display, Glass and Metal which can detect heartbeat and blood flow. These ultrasonic fingerprint sensors are also the first to be able to scan through OLED display stacks of up to 1200um.
