Samsung's next year flagship phone lineup will reportedly include three Galaxy S10 models with a 5G variant and a foldable smartphone.
Sources told Bloomberg that Samsung has successfully integrated an in-display fingerprint sensor with the display of the Galaxy S10. There will be three Galaxy S10 models, one of which will be a more affordable model. A 5G model is also in the works.
The standard Galaxy S10 model is known internally as “Beyond”, and has an OLED display with curves on both sides, rounded corners, three rear cameras, a front-facing camera “tucked under the screen” and almost no bezel at the top and bottom.
While its screen size is unknown, the footprint of this handset is said to be the same as the 5.8-inch Galaxy S9. A bigger “Plus” model is in the pipeline as well.
The more affordable model will have a conventional display without the curves and may lack an in-display fingerprint sensor depending on the costs. There is also another prototype which does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack.
As for the foldable phone, it is known internally as “winner”. There are currently two prototypes which Samsung is testing; one longer horizontally and the other vertically when unfolded, while both open from side and side.
Samsung’s engineers are said to have preferred the portrait type as it can be used better with one hand. The foldable phone will have no in-display fingerprint sensor due to technical difficulties. The extra screen on the outside will allow the user to check emails and messages without flipping the phone open.
The display is rumored to open with a snap similar to flip phones. Due to the bigger surface area of the display, the prototype weighs more than 200g. This has resulted in Smasung reducing the battery size to keep the weight manageable.
The hinge has been tested internally to fold more than 200,000 times, but there are concerns that technical issues might arise once full production is underway. A new version of Android is rumored to be developed by Samsung and Google for the foldable phone, which means the phone will not hit retail shelves until after Q2 2019.
