According to South Korean site ETNews.com, Samsung is preparing to launch the Galaxy Alpha, its first smartphone with a metallic chassis on August 13. The device is said to hit retail shelves in September, which coincides with Apple's expected launch of its new iPhone(s).
Quoting information from its source, ETNews.com claims that the Galaxy Alpha is part of a new flagship line-up that will make an annual debut in between the launch of the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note devices. The Galaxy Alpha is expected to bridge the gap between the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note flagship devices and bring the high-end specs in a better chassis to the masses.
Rumors of a metallic smartphone surfaced as early as January 2014 when SamMobile's source suggested that the Galaxy S5 will come in both metal and plastic variants. Since then, several photos and a video of an aluminum-clad Galaxy S5 variant have popped up on the Internet.
Samsung's continued focus on delivering flagship smartphones may not be viable in the long term as it faces stiff competition from Chinese phone makers who are chipping away its market share in the entry to mid-level segments. The company projected earnings of around 7.2 trillion won (about US$7 billion) for Q2 2014, which is a 24.5% decline year-over-year.
