OPPO Reno12 Pro.
OPPO announced its next generation of flagship-lite devices, the Reno12 and Reno12 Pro, earlier this week (18 June 2024) for the European market. To build upon the series’ reputation for photography and selfies, the latest Reno series phones now come with generative AI. (If you're keen to know about the local launch, details are here.)
Really? GenAI on a non-flagship phone?
If you haven’t heard, OPPO works closely with Google, Microsoft, MediaTek, and Qualcomm to produce relevant generative AI tools for its phones (which it calls “AI Phones”). OPPO has a dedicated AI research facility in Dongguan (China) to house its AI talent and create proprietary AI tools and features.
The company also outlined its approach to offering generative AI across its entire phone lineup, where lower-priced OPPO handsets would rely more on cloud AI processing, and flagship mobiles could tap more into its on-device AI processing.
OPPO's proprietary AI research and collaboration with its AI partners produced this feature.
Naturally, tools that make portraiture photography or selfies even more convenient are specific to the Reno12 and Reno12 Pro. Both phones get an upgraded photobomb remover (AI Eraser 2.0) and AI Clear Face. The latter helps restore facial details in group photos, including participants who are not in focus. A third AI feature, AI Best Face (above), can also identify and fix subjects with eyes closed.

If you’re familiar with Google’s Pixel Camera AI and Samsung’s Galaxy AI, you’ll realise these generative AI features also exist under different names. The distinction is that, besides the Google Pixel 8a (review here), Reno12 and Reno12 Pro are the only non-flagship phones in Singapore with these tools.
Other AI features unrelated to photography include AI Recording Summary, which helps organise your voice notes, and AI Toolbox, a sidebar that recommends relevant AI tools based on the content currently displayed on the Reno12 series device.
Other features
OPPO Reno12 series, consisting of the Reno12 and Reno12 Pro.
To improve network stability, the Reno12 series phones have AI LinkBoost, which combines nine antennas in a 360° surround layout to better receive and maintain network selection. The feature also comes with a system-level AI model to help with network switching, which is crucial if you’re travelling at high speeds on public transport.
While both phones use different processors, they still come with an updated ColorOS Trinity Engine package that’s more efficient at allocating processing resources, prioritising fluid use and efficient power consumption. Other optimisations include RAM-Vita, an updated RAM utilisation engine that can keep background apps up and running for 72 hours, and ROM-Vita, a lossless compression software that reduces duplicate files and lightens infrequently used apps.
Reno12 and Reno12 Pro specifications
The Reno12 and Reno12 Pro both use a Sony LYT-600 sensor with f/1.8 aperture, AutoFocus and OIS for their 50MP primary camera. It is also responsible for the 2x zoom in Portrait Mode, replicating the bokeh seen in professionally shot portraitures. Both also offer a secondary 8MP ultra-wide camera (f/2.2 aperture).

The third camera is where they differ. Reno12 has a 2MP macro camera, while the Reno12 Pro packs a 50MP telephoto (f/2.0) with 2x optical zoom. Also, their f/2.0 front-facing camera varies, with Reno12 using a 23MP front camera, while the Reno12 Pro is at 50MP.
Both Reno12 and Reno12 Pro use the same MediaTek Dimensity 7300-Energy chipset.
Both phones also pack a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with identical resolution (2,412 x 1,080 pixels), maximum refresh rate (120Hz), panel brightness (600-nits typical, 1,200-nits peak), HDR10+, and DCI-P3 support.
The key difference lies in their protection: Reno12 uses a Corning Gorilla Glass 7i cover glass, while Reno12 Pro comes with a stronger Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2.
Both models also use the same chipset (MediaTek Dimensity 7300-Energy), the same grade of RAM and storage (LPDDR4X and UFS 3.1, respectively), the same battery capacity and fast-charging speeds (5,000mAh with 80W SuperVOOC), and come with Wi-Fi 6 support and Bluetooth 5.4. Both phones are also rated IP65 for water and dust resistance.
