Fast battery charging technologies are advanced rapidly today with MediaTek claiming to have the fastest one to date.

Officially known as Pump Express 3.0, MediaTek states that it can charge a smartphone battery from zero to 70% in as little as 20 minutes! Moreover, a five-minute charge can provide up to four hours of 3G talk time.

“The engineering challenge in the smartphone world today is satisfying consumer demand for powerful, rich multimedia features without needing to plug in their phones all day long,” said Jeffrey Ju, Executive Vice President and co-Chief Operating Officer. “Our technology lets consumers power up quickly to stay connected, on the go and using their favorite applications whether for work or play instead of tethered to an outlet.”

In comparison, Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0 can charge a flat battery to 80% in 35 minutes while Oppo's Super VOOC Flash Charge can juice up a 2,500mAh battery equipped Oppo smartphone to a full charge in 15 minutes.

MediaTek also claims that Pump Express 3.0 is the first solution to enable direct charge through USB Type-C port which prevents the device from overheating. Pump Express 3.0 is also said to be ultra-safe with bi-directional communication, and 20-plus safety and device protection built-in.

Pump Express 3.0 will be available in the MediaTek Helio Series P20 with devices expected to be in the market by end of this year. It will also be available in future smartphone chipsets and phone vendors can have the option to add-on.
