Days after Reuters reported that Toshiba is selling its image sensor business, Sony today has confirmed that it is currently negotiating with the former over the transfer of several semiconductor fabrication facilities, equipment and related assets in Oita Prefecture.

Sony plans to use these facilities to manufacture CMOS image sensors as it anticipates further market growth in the near future. Employees of Toshiba and its affiliates who are employed at these facilities, will be offered employment opportunities within Sony upon completion of the transfer.

The transfer is expected to be completed within the fiscal year ending 31st March, 2016. By withdrawing from the image sensor business, Toshiba can focus on products where it has advantages in, and strives to increase profitability of its system LSI business.
