A new triple-screen foldable phone is reportedly in the works.

According to reports from reliable sources, including Digital Chat Station on Weibo and leaker Ice Universe on X (formerly Twitter), a prototype of a phone with three folding screen segments has been made.

The reported device is said to have a horizontal folding mechanism with two creases that divide the display into three sections. Digital Chat Station mentions both inward and outward folding capabilities, suggesting a possible Z-shaped configuration rather than a traditional billfold design.

This development could potentially reshape the market currently dominated by dual-fold designs like Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold series or the Honor Magic series. While Digital Chat Station didn’t specifically name the manufacturer, Ice Universe has stated that this innovative design is from Huawei.

A key factor in enabling this triple-fold concept is due to Huawei’s advances in creating ultra-thin foldable hardware. This is important because as a fold is introduced to a device, it will inherently increase the device’s thickness when closed which can compromise the user experience when handling the phone.

When fully unfolded, the prototype reportedly boasts a large 10-inch display. This would surpass the current market competitors like the 7.6-inch Galaxy Z Fold 5 or Huawei’s very own 7.85-inch display on the Mate X3 when unfolded. The extra screen real estate could potentially offer enhanced productivity for users. That said, ensuring the device remains pocketable and lightweight is a challenge.

If these reports prove to be true, Samsung could face a serious challenge in the foldable smartphone market. Having not prioritised the thin aspect of their foldable designs, this could leave the Korean tech giant in the dust as more competitors like Huawei further innovate and advance their foldable hardware.

The sources made no mention of any release date. However, Samsung will hold its Unpacked event tomorrow where it is expected to unveil the the new Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6
