Huawei is rumored to be developing its own mobile operating system (OS) for the past three years to reduce reliance on Google's Android platform.
Huawei may be developing its own mobile OS to differentiate itself from the competition.
According to GizmoChina, sources claim that Huawei has been developing its own mobile OS for three years. In addition, Huawei is preparing to launch a smartphone powered by a self-developed chip optimized for the new mobile OS.
If you've noticed, Huawei has been using its own processors - the HiSilicon Kirin - on an increasing number of its smartphones which include the recently announced P8. Huawei appears to be taking on a similar strategy as Samsung; the South Korean company merged its Bada OS with Tizen and released devices powered by the platform including an app store.
Cutting its reliance on Google's Android platform may be a long term strategy as the smartphone market is getting saturated. In IDC's latest report, Huawei ranks as the third biggest phone maker in China behind Apple and Xiaomi. If it wants to stand out from the crowd, a home-grown mobile OS may be the solution although Huawei is rumored to be making the next Nexus phone.
